Summer
Temptations!
How
summer inactivity affects teen drug use and what's being
done to help.
Without the daily grind of school and
adult supervision, summer time can be a time to relax,
enjoy vacations, idle away time, work a summer job, and
be subjected to a whole host of "temptations" that can
lead to serious consequences. Because of busy
family schedules, and teens' "budding adulthood", many
teens experience more "unsupervised time" and exposure
to "risky behaviors". According to a 2004
National Survey on Drug Use and Health report, "more
teens first try marijuana in June and July than any
other months of the year. Each day in June and July an
average of 6,300 youth try marijuana for the first time.
The number of new underage drinkers and cigarette
smokers also jumps during the summer months." A
recent Office of National Drug Control Policy media
campaign stresses that parents should know where your
teen is and what he or she will be doing during
unsupervised time." Additional research
underscores "teens with unsupervised time are three
times more likely to use marijuana or other drugs.
Unsupervised teens are also more likely to engage in
risky behaviors such as underage drinking, sexual
activity, and cigarette smoking than other
teens." Alcohol related trauma continues to
be a leading cause of injury and death for both adults
and teens. Each year, approximately 5,000 young
people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage
drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from motor
vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300
from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries
such as falls, burns, and drownings. Many of these
result from summer time activities. In an
effort to impact alcohol related injuries and deaths,
from August 15 - September 1, 2008, nationwide law
enforcement agencies everywhere are joining forces for
"2008 Labor Day Crackdown". Law
enforcement will conduct highly visible campaigns to
prevent drunk driving & save lives. NHTSA has
created a Law Enforcement Action Kit that includes
everything you'll need for preparing & promoting
your enforcement campaigns in English and Spanish. The
kit includes:
* Earned
media templates * Talking
points * Multimedia
ads *
Posters * Fact
sheets * Much more!
