SAMHSA Awards 25 Grants Totaling $190 Million for Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Programs

funding Dollar Signs ImageThe Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently announced 25 grants totaling up to $190 million over five years to implement the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grants (SPF-SIG) to advance community-based programs for substance abuse prevention. SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention will administer the grants.

The funds will be used to implement a five-step planning process known to support positive youth development, reduce risk-taking behaviors, build on assets, and prevent problem behaviors.  The five steps are: (1) conduct needs assessments; (2) build state and local capacity; (3) develop a comprehensive strategic plan; (4) implement evidence-based prevention policies, programs and practices; and (5) monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, sustaining what has worked well.  Inherent in the process is sustainability and cultural competency.

In the Southwest region, Oklahoma's Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Service will receive $2.135 million per year for five years to implement the statewide SPF-SIG.  Previously, Oklahoma's Cherokee Nation received a SPF-SIG to serve 14 counties in northeast Oklahoma counties with significant Indian populations.  With this award, all States in the Southwest region have received SPF-SIG awards.

Grant Review Opportunities at the
Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

Review ImageOn a continuous basis, the three centers of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) are seeking professionals to evaluate applications for Federal grants. SAMHSA reviewers must have related program experience and education, be able to analyze grant applications effectively against specific criteria, be able to express their evaluation clearly in writing, and be interested in contributing to the advancement of knowledge. Specifically, the agency is interested in reviewers with the following specific program experience and knowledge:

  • Individuals with background in mental health services and knowledge of community-based systems of care and services for adults with serious mental illnesses and children with serious emotional disturbances.
  • Individuals with background and knowledge of substance abuse prevention, who have expertise or experience in working with activities that discourage substance abuse and behaviors increasing the risk of substance abuse.
  • Individuals with expertise in evidence-based, effective substance abuse treatment services, programs and activities.

Grant reviewers gain many skills out of their experience such as:

  • Understanding of the grant-making process
  • Opportunity to network with colleagues
  • Chance to exercise professional judgment and expertise
  • Intellectual challenge
  • Reviewers are chosen for particular grant programs, based on their knowledge, education and experience
