The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)
is an organization of volunteers that seeks to "improve the health
and safety of communities across the country by organizing and
utilizing public health, medical, and other volunteers". It began
in response to an admonition by President Bush in his 2002 State of the
Union address encouraging individuals to volunteer in support of their
country.
The work of the
MRC is community-based, seeking local volunteers who want to make a
difference donating their time and expertise to help others. This work
is done not only in times of emergency, but throughout the year as the
MRC seeks to be a promoter of healthy living.
The MRC is continually working toward disease prevention,
eliminating health disparities, and improving public health
preparedness. MRC units have been used to assist the Red Cross and the
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in times of crisis, such as
during the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons.
MRC volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds
allowing the MRC to assist people in many ways. Volunteers include:

In addition, the Surgeon General's Office, in conjunction
with the MRC, is exploring new ways to collaborate with SAMHSA/CSAP to
educate and train MRC volunteers on substance abuse related issues and
interventions.
