The NSDUH Report: Smokeless Tobacco Use, Initiation, and Relationship to Cigarette Smoking: 2002 to 2007

NSDUH Report SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies (OAS) has recently released The NSDUH Report: Smokeless Tobacco Use, Initiation, and Relationship to Cigarette Smoking: 2002 to 2007.

The report is derived from SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health (NSDUH) which provides trends in smokeless tobacco for the years 2002 to 2007. The report includes data specific to age, gender, and demographics.

Some of the key points from the report include:

  • The rate of past month smokeless tobacco use remained relatively stable in the range of 3.0 to 3.3 percent between 2002 and 2007 among persons aged 12 or older; however, there were increases among certain subpopulations-in particular, among adolescent males
  • Among past month smokeless tobacco users, 85.8 percent used cigarettes at some time in their lives, and 38.8 percent used cigarettes in the past month
  • Among persons who had used both smokeless tobacco and cigarettes in their lifetime, 31.8 percent started using smokeless tobacco first, 65.5 percent started using cigarettes first, and 2.7 percent initiated use of smokeless tobacco and cigarettes at about the same time

Alcohol Advertisement Now on Prime Time

Because of the sagging economy and lack of advertising sales, alcohol commercials have again made their way on to primetime television.

An Absolut Vodka advertisement aired during the Grammy Awards this last February in Los Angeles and 14 other cities. This marked the first time in years that liquor was advertised during prime time slots.
