ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH

April is here and it is Alcohol Awareness Month! Alcohol abuse is a significant concern in our society and culture today. This month provides an opportunity to recognize the seriousness of the problem and to examine some of the issues that are Drinkingrelated to alcohol abuse. In addition, there are many resources available to those who work in the field of substance abuse prevention and also for individuals who are dealing with this issue first hand.

  • More than 1/4 (28.1%) of persons aged 12 to 20 used alcohol in the past month, including more than half (51.1 %) of those aged 18 to 20 (2008 NSDUH Report)
  • Nearly 1/3 of current alcohol users aged 12 to 20 (30.6%) paid for the last alcohol they used, and over 50% of them got it free (their sources include: a nonrelative aged 21 or older, another underage person, a parent or guardian, or another relative aged 21 or older) (2008 NSDUH Report)
  • Nearly 16% of pregnant women aged 15 to 17 used alcohol in the past month, and they consumed an average of 24 drinks in the past month (2008 NSDUH Report)
  • Alcohol and prescription drug misuse affects as many as 17% of older adults (SAMHSA Tip 26)

Store that Caters to Teenage Girls and Young Women Selling Flasks

Icing, by Claires, a costume jewelry and accessory store that targets young women and teenage girls, began selling flasks in their stores. Since the introduction of the flasks, opposition has arisen from several groups. Oregon Partnership, a non-profit group out of Oregon, attempted to get the flasks removed, but was unsuccessful (see their letter).

According to different reports, some stores, in response to the opposition, have posted signs that say "Not intended for minors," or the store "Does not support the consumption of alcohol by minors".
