Master of Science in Prevention Science FAQ
What is the current status of the degree program?
The MS in Prevention Science degree proposal is making its way through the OU "approval" process which includes final review and approval by the OU Board of Regents. When it is approved, it will be offered through the College of Liberal Studies/College of Continuing Education (Website: www.ou.edu/cls - Information about the prevention degree won’t be up until it is officially approved).
When will the degree be available?
The SWPC is working in conjunction with the College of Liberal Studies to move the Degree Program Proposal through the OU system. The proposed beginning date is Spring 2009 pending approval of the Graduate College and the Board of Regents.
Are you accepting student applicants in the near future?
Once the degree has been approved we will start accepting student applicants (hopefully for the Spring 2009 semester). In the event that the degree is not approved by Spring ‘09 we are working on an alternate plan that would allow students to apply to the College of Liberal Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Since the Master of Science Degree in Prevention Science will fall under the College of Liberal Studies (CLS) students could begin work on their CLS Graduate Degree Plan by taking some general requirement classes that are required for all CLS Masters Programs.
What are the admission/entrance requirements?
For Regular Admission Status: Applicants admissible to the Graduate College are required to have a 3.00 grade point average on their last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Applicants who have at least 12 hours of graduate work with a 3.0 GPA on those hours are admissible on that basis. (See exceptions at the CLS website).
Does the course work include grant writing or other writing?
Currently there is a plan to include grant writing as an elective course.
Is the degree completely online or will I be required to go somewhere in Oklahoma (or elsewhere)?
The degree will be completely online so there will be no need to travel to the University of Oklahoma or anywhere else.
What kind of financial aid is available?
Financial aid questions should be pursued with the University of Oklahoma’s College of Liberal Studies once the Master’s Degree is being offered. The phone number for the Financial Aid Department at the College of Liberal Studies is 405-325-2929. They will be able to assist you once the degree is in the system. We may also have more information on our website in upcoming months.
What classes do you plan on offering?
Core courses for the degree plan include: Foundations in Prevention Science, Prevention Across the Lifespan, Prevention Strategy Development, Implementation & Evaluation. Planned elective courses include Decision Making, The Ethics of Leadership, Project Management, Federalism and Intergovernmental Relations, Grant Writing, Managing Public Programs, Public Budgeting and Finance, Drug Education, Health Promotion Strategies, and Social Marketing in Health Promotions. The degree will also require a practicum, thesis, or final project.
Who will be teaching classes?
Faculty from the University of Oklahoma in various colleges and departments, including the College of Liberal Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences will be teaching classes for the Prevention Science Master’s Degree.
How do I express my interest in this degree?
