Registration Information:

SWPC's ATODA Prevention Training System online courses are 100% online courses.

  • These courses are offered through the Desire To Learn online course platform at the University of Oklahoma. In order to access the Desire To Learn platform, participants should have reliable internet access and a media player installed on their computer.

  • Participants will not need to download any additional programs to access the course.

  • Each course involves specific requirements which may include online readings, video and audio clips, assignments, quizzes, surveys, and discussions boards. All courses conclude with a course evaluation. All courses are divided into units or modules based on the course learning objectives.

  • Online courses and/or course units are assigned specific start and end dates, in order to encourage timely completion. However, all learning activities are asynchronous, meaning that you may complete each course or course unit anytime during the days assigned to that unit. You have the ability to login as many times as needed and can log-in after the course is completed to review your work.

  • Course participant sizes are unlimited for all online courses.

  • Approximately two business days prior to the start of the online course, you will receive an email which will outline individual user ID, password, and course access information. Additional phone and email technical assistance related to course access and navigation will be available during business hours if needed.

  • Contact Brenda Powell at (405) 325-9180 or bpowell@ou.edu for technical assistance related to online courses.

Certificates of Completion/
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Contact Hours

  • The Southwest Prevention Center is a part of the College of Continuing Education for the University of Oklahoma. Both CEUs and contact hours are given for each course. We also provide CEUs for the National Board of Certified Counselors and the New Mexico Credentialing Board for Behavioral Health Professionals: Prevention Specialist Certification; OK Drug & Alcohol Professional Counselors Association (ODAPCA); and TX Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (TCBAP).

  • Certificates will be issued to participants upon the satisfactory completion of a training event. Satisfactory completion is defined as a participant having completed all the documentation and attended all sessions in full.

  • Certificates will be mailed to the address provided by the participant within 30 days after the workshop.
  • If you do not receive your Certificate 30 days after a training please contact Brenda Powell at (405) 325-9180 or bpowell@ou.edu.

NOTICE REGARDING CONTINUING EDUCATION UNIT (CEU) CREDIT

The term CEU stands for Continuing Education Unit.  One Continuing Education Unit equals ten contact hours of participation in organized continuing education classes and/or training conducted by a qualified instructor.  A contact hour is equivalent to one 60-minute interaction between an instructor and the participant.  One contact hour equals 0.1 CEU.

The education requirement for the Certified Prevention Specialist credential states “100 hours of prevention specific education.  Fifty hours of this education must be ATOD specific.  Six hours must be specific to prevention ethics.”  Note that the requirement does NOT mention CEUs.  Credentialing boards are aware that, for example, 0.6 CEUs in Prevention Ethics equals 6 contact hours and fulfills the requirement.

WHO will accept our CEU Credits?

Online courses provide contact hours and CEU credit through the University of Oklahoma OUTREACH College of Continuing Education (CCE). SWPC Continuing Education hours are accepted for CEU's by the following certifying bodies:

  • NBCC -  Nat’l Board of Certified Counselors;
  • ODAPCA - OK Drug & Alcohol Professional Counselors Association
  • TCBAP -  TX Certification Board of Addiction Professionals.
  • New Mexico Credentialing Board for Behavioral Health Professionals: Prevention Specialist Certification
